Over the decades Wan Chai has transformed from fishing village to Second World War military base to red-light district to one of Hong Kong’s hippest neighbourhoods. The Hari fits perfectly into the gritty-glam neighbourhood, with 210 design-led rooms that feature floor-to-ceiling windows, bathing the rooms in natural light by day and neon by night. The penthouse suites have balconies big enough to party on and partial views of the harbour. Elsewhere, there are two stupidly popular restaurants (one Japanese, the other Italian) and a terrace bar decorated with tropical foliage and fairy lights.

It was terribly important that the hotel had confidence and an attitude of its own. For the design, there was an uncensored DNA or narrative that we wanted to pick up and bring to The Hari Hong Kong from [The Hari London], but not at all mimic it. There are homages to the London property, whether it’s the library walls that we used or the layering of fabrics.

The Hari is a stylish hotel with a lounge filled with art books. A London gallery curates the paintings, which are available to buy, displayed in guests’ rooms. There are in-house Japanese and Italian restaurants, as well as a spacious gym with a terrace for outdoor workouts.
