CAM RANH, Vietnam – With this year’s grand opening of The Anam, two men have set the stage for the emergence of a whole new reason to visit Vietnam’s south central coast - Cam Ranh. Once upon a time famous as the largest American military base in Vietnam, Cam Ranh today is coming into its own as a pristine, high-end alternative to an older, somewhat fatigued neighbor, Nha Trang. When Vietnamese businessman Pham Van Hien set foot on Cam Ranh five years ago, he was struck by its unspoiled sands and waters, its dramatic headlands and offshore islands. A dream took root and has come to fruition in The Anam.

SINGAPORE — With a new natural spa and the launch of a wellness experience “A Mantra for Mantra,” the all-new Mantra Samui Resort is attracting spa-goers to its peaceful perch overlooking the Gulf of Thailand. The Jai Spa is a cornerstone of the hotel’s comprehensive new look. The intimate space has four softly-lit private treatment rooms and a foot reflexology area. Inspired by the dense jungle that surrounds the hillside property, the spa features bamboo-clad walls that reach up to a lofty ceiling. The spa blends most of its treatment products in-house, using natural ingredients harvested from its gardens. Thai herbs infuse Jai’s flagship concoctions, and homegrown lemongrass is steamed to create an aromatic atmosphere. The beloved coconut informs the signature treatment, the Yaa Jai, its milk, not oil, deployed for a deep, tension-releasing massage. Warm coconut poultices are strategically applied to tight spots to further reduce stress.

Drawing on centuries-old recipes handed down the generations, the mother cooks serve up timeless Vietnamese classics, as if they were cooking for their own families. The dishes include bò nướng lá lốt (grilled beef in betel leaf), bún bò Huế (Hue-style beef noodle soup) and bánh xèo (crispy Vietnamese pancake), and are complemented by plenty of fresh, zesty salads and other treats.
