Galle Face Hotel
In October 2015, more than 150 years after its debut on the shores of the Indian Ocean, Galle Face Hotel emerged from a 30-month long restoration. The hotel’s North Wing’s 72 rooms and suites, restaurants and bars, lobby, and ballrooms have been restored to their former grandeur, and a croquet lawn and an ocean view executive lounge added. Opened in 1864 by four British entrepreneurs, the property is where Vivien Leigh stayed when she went East; where Sir Arthur C. Clarke penned 3001: The Final Odyssey; and where the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip’s first personal car, a 1935 model Standard Nine, still stands on prominent display today.
